Kitchen Pass-Throughs

Lately we are doing more Open Plan Kitchens than not, but we don’t want to forget about the Pass-Through style kitchen.

When we remodel a kitchen, we try to make it as warm and inviting as possible. Usually this results in taking down a wall or two in order to make it more open. But what if your budget doesn’t allow to take down one or two walls, but you still want to open up your kitchen? A pass-through is a great way of opening up your kitchen.

Did you know that the kitchen pass-through was originally designed to provide a way to serve food from the kitchen while concealing any mess that was created while cooking? So not only is a pass-through a functional design to the kitchen, it is also a decorative appeal.

There are different forms of a pass-through, and thanks to an article that was on titled, “Don’t Pass Up the Kitchen Pass-Through” written by Lisa Frederick; we can share some pictures of 8 different kinds!

The Walk-In Pantry

In the Spring 2011 NKBA: KBIS Issue1walk-in pantries were listed as #6 for the top 10 trends from the 2011 NKBA1Design Competition. The need for a larger, separate pantry has been necessitated by less wall cabinets; open plan kitchens are requiring alternative pantry and storage solutions, such as walk-in pantries. A working pantry is a tool that most homeowners would love to have.

Wikipedia explains a butler’s pantry (or serving pantry) as: a utility room in a large house, primarily used to store serving items, rather than food. Traditionally, a butler’s pantry was used for storage, cleaning and counting of silver; European butlers often slept in the pantry, as their job was to keep the silver under lock and key. The wine log and merchant’s account books may also have been kept in there. The room would be used by the butler and other domestic staff; it is often called a butler’s pantry even in households where there is no butler.

We all dream of having the best pantry possible and they come in all different shapes and sizes; but make sure to do your homework first! Here are 10 mistakes that the homeowner generally makes when it comes to kitchen pantries:
1. Planning the space before finding the shelving or cabinets. Don’t forget about the depth of the shelves or cabinets! The depth plays an important role in the design for your pantry, if you don’t allow for enough space for the depth, than you will end up losing valuable space.
2. Using doors that open inward. Why take up that valuable space inside of the pantry? And getting to those items stored behind the swing just leads to frustration. Stay with doors that swing outward, or if your space allows it, have a pocket door.
3. Not considering the pantry in the flow of your kitchen. Keep in mind how you would want to move from the pantry to the counter and the refrigerator. (Pay attention to how you move about your kitchen on a daily basis, where would a pantry be best placed for you?) Using your pantry will be an everyday thing, you need to make sure that you are able to access it with ease.
4. Not including electrical outlets. Especially if you are using it like a butler’s pantry, it is a great idea to have these. If you don’t think that you would ever use them, think about for down the road when selling your home.
5. Choosing bad lighting or no lighting at all. You want and need to make sure that you can properly find everything that you have in your pantry at any time during the day. Functionality is the key.
6. Taking up valuable space in your kitchen. Look for unused space, your kitchen doesn’t have to get smaller in order for you to have a pantry.
7. Filling your pantry only with shelves. You can have cabinetry, plate racks, wine racks and other storage compartments or containers. Thinking outside of the box can help you make the most of your pantry storage. Think about the items you stock most and set up your pantry to cater to your needs.
8. Placing your pantry near the laundry room. You need to make sure that the pantry is located in a clean, dark, dry place. Temperature is an important part of this small space. Keep in mind the walls that your pantry shares with other rooms in your home. Rooms like the laundry and office are heat conductors that would make your food spoil more quickly.
9. Using deep shelving. People think that deep shelves are a good idea because you can store more, but keep in mind that you need to be able to quickly reach items in your pantry for it to make sense. Deep shelving can also lead to losing items or items being pushed to the back, causing unwanted waste.
10. Quick planning. Don’t plan to quickly or without considering all angles. A great pantry can really make your kitchen special, spend some time planning it!
